The Skin-Rejuvenating Power of Daily Gratitude
As we approach Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday, our thoughts turn to a few things for which we are grateful. Don’t let gratitude be a once-a-year practice, however. If you don’t have a daily practice of gratitude and appreciation, today is a great time to start one as it yields the beautiful benefits for your skin and well-being.
Highly effective topical skin care products, like Vertere’s, are essential for improving the appearance of the skin so that wrinkles, dark spots, imperfections and blemishes are minimized. So is how you manage stress and your health.
The damage stress causes our skin is often overlooked or minimized as we burn the candle at both ends, although many studies demonstrate its negative impact. Stress ages your skin faster because it has a dehydrating effect on the skin. When you’re under stress, the body takes blood flow away from peripheral organs – like the skin – to provide muscles with energy. If you are in a constant “fight or flight” response, your stress level doesn’t subside. The continuous lack of blood flow to the skin accelerates wrinkles, zaps radiance and contributes to sagging.
Constant stress also increases the inflammatory response in our bodies which is detrimental in so many ways. Concerning our skin, however, that inflammatory response can result in acne blemishes. A 2011 American Academy of Dermatology study showed 25% of women in their 40s experience breakouts. Could the constant never-ending stress so many live with be a contributing factor?
Committing to a daily gratitude practice will help to diffuse stress, which will help your skin look younger and clearer from the reduction in the inflammatory response. There are so many ways to incorporate gratitude daily. Personally, I begin each day with approximately 10 minutes of gratitude. Like Oprah Winfrey, the first thing I give thanks for is being alive. Experiencing that emotion for a few moments has a profound effect on reducing stress.
Besides setting aside time in your morning routine for gratitude, you can also create a daily gratitude practice by:
- Keeping a gratitude journal in which you write a minimum of three things for which you’re grateful each night. Review them again in the morning to start your day from a place of gratitude.
- Expressing your appreciation of others daily. Thanking someone lifts your spirit and theirs.
- Practicing a gratitude meditation.
Whatever you choose, you’ll see beautiful benefits from a daily gratitude practice.
